The Subject

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, a triumphal arch erected in the 18th century, has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Europe. In the autumn of 2014, Neil McGregor, the former Director of the British Museum, curated the excellent exhibition Germany: Memories of a Nation. To accompany the exhibition, Neil MacGregor broadcast on BBC Radio 30 fifteen-minute in which he explored 600 years of Germany's complex and often challenging history using objects, art, landmarks and literature. The first of these, dedicated to the Brandenburg Gate, (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04dwckb#in=collection:p0276f1r) provides a very good starting point for reflecting on the symbolic importance of this landmark, as does the chapter on the book which followed the broadcasts: Neil MacGregor, Germany: Memories of a Nation (London: Allen Lane, 2014), Chapter 1, “The View from the Gate”, pp. 3-16.

The Task

Create a poster (size A1: 594 mm x 840mm), using text and image, which portrays the significance of the Brandenburg Gate as a symbol in one or more of the following time periods: the past, the present, the future. The text should be in German and the proportion of text to image should fall within the ratios of 70 (text):30 (image) – 30 (text):70 (image).
